Superstitions

A strong and talented mom.

A Mom of Steel

When I was a little girl, I worried incessantly, over just about everything. I did this as a way to protect myself from shock and disappointment if something bad happened. I would worry about upcoming tests at school, so that I would be prepared if I received a bad grade. I would worry about recess at school, so that if my classmates didn’t want to play with me, I could face it without crying. And as I got older, this worrying took on more of a “preventative” role in my mind. If, for example, I worried about my parents getting into a car accident, this somehow prevented it from actually happening. And I used the fact that my parents never did get into a car accident as proof that this preventative worrying was actually working. And then as I got older still, I faced a variety of challenges, and for…

We’re off to see the Wizard!

Now that the baby is six months old and I’m not (quite) as crazy with sleep deprivation, I’ve been trying to make a more conscious effort to have ‘girl time’. Just with my Aves. I felt sooooo guilty in the beginning about not spending as much time with her. I thought that the poor, abandoned child would surely resent me for the rest of her life and inevitably date a drug addict as a teenager to get back at me. Such is life. So now, Daniel gets some
Man time with ‘ol dad and I get to be with my girl.
A few weeks ago we went to see the play “The Wizard of Oz” in Toronto. It was playing at the Canon Theatre, one of my favs! I had been a bit worried about taking Ava so young, and had been cautioned about scary parts-but it was fantastic! She was fantastic! It was one of the BEST days I’ve had with her on record (probably second to introducing her to Cinderella at disneyworld). We took the Go train in, met grandma at union, hopped on the ‘underground train’ aka subway, had lunch and then went to the show. Ava loved feeling like a big girl and was fascinated by the show!! We talked about what scary parts there was going to be and how everyone was just in makeup and acting. She thought it was pretty funny to wonder if the witch had a green bum too! Haha!
One of the coolest things about taking her to the play was that Ava had previously met Danielle Wade, who plays Dorothy, during a live taping of CBC’s show “Over the Rainbow”. Ava was sitting there in a start struck daze! Ava completely loved every minute and to this day talks about it and how she wants to act and sing and dance! Who knows what the future may hold, but it was a nice thought to think that perhaps I have helped inspire something great and that she won’t grow up to date a drug addict out of resentful rage. One can only hope!

Go Pro!

What parent isn’t obsessively in love with their new miracle? (Truth be told, the obsession never fades). Needless to say, dozens upon dozens of photos ensue. In our digital age, pictures are abundant and you will surely find yourself sifting through hundreds of oh-so-cute pics of a dozing, unsmiling baby. And you will love every single one.

So, should you use a professional photographer? And if so, when?

I would 100% recommend using a professional (grandma doesn’t count-unless of course she is a professional). I mean actually pay someone who knows about lighting and posing, lenses and angles and all that professional stuff that they get paid for. Think of your wedding-how many of those disposable camera shots would you actually hang on your wall? Nothing will become more precious to you than newborn photos.

It is best to have this done within the baby’s first ten days of life. This is because they still have that adorable squishy, scrunchy position perfected. They are still womb like. The pink skin, the wrinkles, the curled up legs and fingers and tiny toes. It is the image of wonder and perfection and they will never, ever, look like that again. They are also still very sleepy and non-moving and will be very cooperative for poses. It will be near impossible to get a 6 month old to sit and look in one direction, nevermind lay dozily in a fur lined laundry basket.

So spend the money, capture that perfection and when they colour on your walls in a year, look at them and cry and remember that they still are a perfect miracle!
